Yamaha WR125R Dual-Sport Returns: 125cc VVA Engine and 21-Inch Front
14.5 hp VVA single + 21-inch front hoop with 265mm clearance + Yamaha gives European A1 riders a genuine full-sized trail weapon again.
Part of Throttle Times’ live coverage of EICMA 2026.
For over a decade, European teenagers and car-licence holders looking for a genuine, full-size dual-sport motorcycle with proper trail geometry have had almost nowhere to turn. When tightening Euro emissions forced the original Yamaha WR125R into retirement in the mid-2010s, the lightweight market fragmented into budget air-cooled trail plonkers or razor-sharp, €6,000 Italian competition four-strokes with punishing maintenance intervals.
At EICMA 2026, Yamaha finally closed the gap. Stepping onto the Milan floor alongside the lightweight Yamaha Ténéré 4 Concept, the Japanese manufacturer pulled the wraps off the production 2027 Yamaha WR125R. Built around Yamaha’s high-tech Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) liquid-cooled engine and a proper 21-inch/18-inch spoked wheelset, the new machine restores a dependable, high-mileage dual-sport to Europe’s A1 and B-licence ranks.
The Minarelli 125cc VVA Engine: Maximum Legal A1 Power
The 2027 WR125R is powered by Yamaha’s proven 125cc liquid-cooled, 4-valve SOHC single-cylinder engine featuring Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), producing the legal maximum 14.5 metric horsepower (10.7 kW) at 10,000 rpm and 11.5 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm.
The VVA mechanism switches between low-speed and high-speed intake cam profiles at 7,400 rpm, solving the perennial weakness of small-capacity four-strokes by delivering tractable off-idle crawling power in rocky ruts while maintaining spirited pull all the way to its 11,000 rpm ceiling. Power reaches the rear wheel via a smooth-shifting 6-speed transmission and an assist-and-slipper clutch that prevents rear-wheel hop during aggressive trail downshifts.
“A beginner off-road machine should never feel like a toy,” stated Yamaha Motor Europe’s dual-sport product lead during the EICMA unveiling. “The WR125R gives young European riders genuine 21-inch off-road chassis geometry, long-travel KYB damping, and modern Euro 5+ engine management, bridging the gap between urban commuting and weekend green laning.”
Full-Size Dirt Dimensions: KYB Suspension and 21/18 Spoked Wheels
Unlike downsized mini-duals, the WR125R is built around a heavy-duty steel semi-double cradle frame sporting full-sized off-road proportions, including a 41mm KYB front fork delivering 240mm of travel and a linked Monocross rear shock offering 220mm of rear wheel travel.
The bike rolls on a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked aluminum wheel combination fitted with Dunlop D605 dual-sport rubber, yielding 265mm of ground clearance and an authentic 875mm seat height. Braking is handled by a 267mm front wave disc clamped by a dual-piston caliper with off-road tuned front-wheel ABS, paired with a 220mm rear disc. A compact LCD instrument panel incorporates Yamaha’s Y-Connect smartphone telematics, giving riders phone notifications, trip logging, and maintenance reminders directly on the dash.

The Rider’s Trade-Off: High Seat Height vs. True Off-Road Clearance
The principal compromise of the WR125R is its uncompromising 875mm seat height, which will undoubtedly intimidate shorter novice riders.
Yamaha refused to compromise ground clearance or suspension stroke to flatter inseams: this is a full-sized dual-sport capable of clearing fallen logs, deep water bars, and boulder fields without smashing its engine cradle. While taller riders will relish the spacious stand-up ergonomics and natural flat seat profile, novice A1 riders under 175 cm will have to accept one-toed stops at urban traffic lights.
European Pricing and Dealership Arrival
The 2027 Yamaha WR125R will arrive in European dealerships in April 2027, offered in classic Icon Blue and Yamaha Black liveries, with pricing targeted around €4,990. Following on from retro tributes like the Yamaha XSR900 GP, Yamaha’s revitalised small-displacement lineup shows that the factory is serious about cultivating the next generation of European adventure riders from their very first licence stamp.
