Alpinestars has unveiled the Tech-Air 5 PLASMA at EICMA 2026, delivering an ultralight autonomous motorcycle airbag vest that drops system weight by 25% down to 1,530 grams. By replacing dense solid back panels with bio-based Nucleon PLASMA viscoelastic armor and integrating a DIY swappable gas inflator, the Italian gear maker tackles the twin complaints of autonomous safety gear: thermal bulk and mandatory dealer servicing after deployment.

The launch intensifies the standalone airbag rivalry in Milan, arriving alongside the Dainese Debuts Smart GO Airbag Vest. While Dainese eliminated shoulder coverage to build a minimalist commuter piece, Alpinestars preserves complete chest, rib, back, and shoulder protection tailored for all-day touring and adventure riding.

Re-Engineering the Under-Jacket Chassis

The Tech-Air 5 PLASMA weighs 1,530 grams across eight sizes (XS to 4XL), shedding over 500 grams from the original Tech-Air 5. Alpinestars achieved this mass reduction by adopting a co-injected Nucleon PLASMA back protector certified to CE EN 1621-2:2014 Level 1.

The chassis pairs mono-layer stretch mesh at the collar, underarms, and chest with the open-cell grid of the PLASMA insert. This structure aligns directly with European jacket exhaust vents, circulating airflow across the rider’s spine rather than trapping heat against the kidneys. A deeper underarm cut prevents bunching beneath tight leather suits or textile adventure gear.

Zipping the vest engages an internal magnetic sensor, instantly arming the tri-axial accelerometers and gyroscopes with haptic vibration feedback. The internal lithium-ion battery provides up to 30 hours of continuous ride time, with a standard USB-C port restoring full charge in under four hours.

Algorithm Architecture: Street, Off-Road, and Race Modes

The Tech-Air 5 PLASMA features three dedicated crash detection firmware profiles switchable directly from the chest display without needing a smartphone app. Riders press the chest LED button for two seconds to cycle through three modes:

  • Street Mode: Calibrated for highway touring and urban riding, monitoring for rear-end collisions while stopped, high-side events, and frontal impacts.
  • Off-Road Mode: Tuned for dual-sport and adventure riding on loose gravel, filtering out suspension chatter and small jumps while protecting against trail ejections.
  • Race Mode: Programmed for closed circuits, accommodating extreme lean angles and heavy trail braking while suppressing false triggers over curbs.
“By pairing our ventilated PLASMA matrix with a streamlined single-canister inflator, we engineered an autonomous airbag that disappears under riding gear while offering immediate, field-serviceable readiness,” stated the Alpinestars safety development team in Milan.

DIY Single-Canister Deployment and Servicing

The most practical update for long-distance adventure riders is the user-replaceable gas inflator. Instead of mailing the vest to a service center after deployment, riders can access a quick-release hatch to replace the single-canister argon cylinder themselves.

Provided the internal bladder is intact, riders swap the gas cylinder on the roadside with a fresh unit (€130 / $139.95). The system is certified for up to six deployments before requiring factory inspection. Alongside lightweight gear like the Aprilia Debuts Throttle Carbon Helmet by Alpinestars, this modular maintenance approach resolves long-standing touring frustrations.

The Rider’s Trade-Off: Weight & Breathability vs Bladder Volume

Selecting the Tech-Air 5 PLASMA involves balancing impact attenuation volume against real-world usability. To achieve the 1,530-gram target and maximize airflow through the Nucleon PLASMA back protector, Alpinestars certified the inflatable chamber to CE EN 1621-4 Level 1 rather than the bulkier, higher-displacement Level 2 bladders found in heavier track vests.

For touring, commuting, and dual-sport riding, the trade-off strongly favors wearable comfort. Standalone airbags are only effective if riders actually wear them; dense, unventilated vests frequently stay behind in hot weather. By venting the spine and trimming bulk, Alpinestars delivers full shoulder and rib protection in a package riders will keep zipped up all season.

European deliveries begin in early 2027 with an MSRP of €799.95 ($869.95) across sizes XS to 4XL.
