Cardo's Venture Helmet Bakes the Intercom Right Into the Shell

Every group ride I've ever been on has had the same moment: someone up front spots a hazard, does an elaborate hand signal that means either "gravel patch" or "I need to stop for gas," and by the time it filters back through six riders it's been reinterpreted as "wave at the farmer." Cardo and Leatt just quietly solved that problem for off-road riding, and they did it by building the intercom straight into the helmet instead of bolting one on.

Cardo Systems has launched the Venture, its first off-road helmet and the first one on the market with a mesh communication system fully integrated into the shell rather than clipped on as an accessory. It's built on Leatt's Moto 8.5 platform, runs $799 MSRP, and lands at dealers later this summer.

The comms, which is the actual point

The Venture runs Cardo's second-generation Dynamic Mesh Communication — up to 15 riders in a group, roughly a mile of range, and it'll still talk to Bluetooth units from other brands if your buddy shows up with a different helmet. Audio comes through 40mm Sound by JBL speakers, voice commands work, firmware updates over the air, and the electronics themselves are removable and serviceable rather than sealed in for life. It's also rated IP67 — dust-tight and fine after a dunk past three feet, which is a relevant spec for anyone who's ever misjudged a creek crossing.

"Off-road riding has always been about pushing limits, but communication has lagged behind, until now," said Cardo CEO Alon Lumbroso. For a coach walking a newer rider through a section in real time instead of relying on hand signals from thirty feet away, or just a group that wants to call out a hazard before someone finds it the hard way, that's a real safety upgrade dressed up as a convenience feature.

The helmet doing the actual protecting

The Venture didn't start from scratch — it's the Leatt Moto 8.5 shell underneath, which means a Kevlar/carbon/fiberglass composite construction, four-density impact foam, and Leatt's 360-degree Turbine Technology that lets the helmet shift slightly on impact to cut rotational forces. Emergency-release cheek pads, a double D-ring strap, a breakaway peak, and neck-brace compatibility round it out — Leatt did invent the neck brace, after all. It's ECE 22.06 and DOT certified, so it covers motocross, off-road, and dual-sport/ADV use without needing a second lid in the closet.

Fit-wise it's an intermediate oval with Leatt's Pro-Fit modular pad system, an antimicrobial Ionic+ liner, and vent channels routed through the interior shell to keep things from turning into a sauna mid-ride. Sizes run XS to XXL, weight is 2.8–3.4 lbs depending on size and whether the electronics are installed, and the warranty is five years on the helmet, three on the electronics, one on the battery.

I have not been on a group ride in over a month, which is a separate and unrelated tragedy, but the idea of an off-road helmet that just talks to the other four helmets in your crew without anyone buying a separate comm unit is the kind of thing that makes we want to actually schedule the ride instead of just texting about it for six weeks.
