Indian Unveils a 125-Bike Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition, and I'm Not One of Them
Indian built 125 numbered Chief Vintage Sturgis editions to mark its own 125th anniversary and the rally's Indian-dealer origin story.
Indian Motorcycle has revealed a 125-unit run of the Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition, unveiled on the opening Friday of the 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and priced from $23,999 (~€22,100) in the US. It’s a period-liveried Chief Vintage built around Indian’s air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 V-twin, and every one of the 125 bikes carries its own numbered plaque.
I’ve never been to Sturgis and, if I’m honest, my chances of getting there before I’m too old to enjoy the gravel roads out of town are shrinking every year. But I still read every word of this reveal, because a manufacturer doing a proper anniversary bike — not just a sticker pack — is the kind of thing that makes me stare at my own garage and wonder what I’m doing with my life.
What the Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition actually is
Indian built this to mark two anniversaries landing in the same year: its own 125th, and its foundational role in the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally’s origin story. The rally traces back to 1938, when local Indian dealer J.C. “Pappy” Hoel and a handful of Indian riders organised what would eventually balloon into the largest motorcycle gathering on the planet. The Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition wears a side-plate number “56” as a direct callback to the number Hoel himself raced under on his Indian Scout.
The bike is finished in a period-correct Indian Motorcycle Red and Cream two-tone, with a multi-coloured Indian headdress logo on the tank lifted straight from 1930s graphics. Each of the 125 units gets an individually serialised number plate, a brown Vintage Espresso solo seat, valanced fenders, wire-spoke wheels and an illuminated warbonnet mascot up front.
Spec sheet, not just paint
Underneath the throwback livery, this is a modern Chief Vintage. Indian fits the 1,890cc (116ci) air-cooled Thunderstroke V-twin, three switchable ride modes (Tour, Standard, Sport), a 4-inch circular Ride Command display with Bluetooth, keyless ignition, cruise control, rear-cylinder deactivation for stop-and-go heat management, ABS, and Metzeler Cruisetec tyres.

Indian hasn’t published UK/EU pricing yet, and given the run is capped at 125 bikes worldwide, don’t expect a long allocation window for European dealers once it does land.
Why Indian’s doing this now
Indian CEO Mike Kennedy tied the release directly to the brand’s own history with the rally: “This bike honors those origins and the spirit that all riders share.” It’s not a subtle message — Indian wants Sturgis week to remember whose dealer got the whole thing started, especially with Harley-Davidson’s own RMCR and RMXR trademark filings suggesting its cross-town rival isn’t sitting still on limited-run heritage bikes either.
It’s the same instinct that made Royal Enfield’s Shotgun 650 x Rough Crafts collaboration sell out in three minutes flat — a tightly numbered heritage cruiser with a real story behind the graphics moves faster than the marketing department can keep up with. I’d put money on this one going the same way, and I will absolutely not be one of the 125.
