Ducati has fundamentally reinvented its flagship hardcore adventure motorcycle at EICMA 2026 in Milan, unveiling the 2027 Ducati DesertX Rally. Rather than issuing another cosmetic Dakar-replica paint job, Borgo Panigale retired the venerable 937cc Testastretta 11° engine and classic tubular steel trellis frame that launched the model in 2022. In their place sits Ducati’s next-generation powertrain architecture: a compact 890cc 90° V2 with variable valve timing slotted inside a rigid aluminum monocoque chassis, transforming the Italian adventure platform into a leaner, stiffer off-road weapon.

890cc IVT V2 Engine Slashes Mass and Sharpens Low-End Pull

The 2027 Ducati DesertX Rally is powered by Ducati’s newly developed 890cc 90° V2 engine featuring Intake Variable Timing (IVT), producing 110 hp (81 kW) at 9,000 rpm and 92 Nm of peak torque at 7,250 rpm. Despite surrendering 47cc to the outgoing Testastretta twin, the new powerplant is 9.4 kg lighter and significantly narrower between the frame spars. Crucially for technical trail riding, the IVT system ensures that over 70% of maximum torque is on tap from just 3,000 rpm, virtually eliminating the low-speed shudder that occasionally afflicted the older desmodromic mill when chugging over alpine scree.

Power reaches the rear hoop via a revised 6-speed gearbox with tightened first through fifth gear ratios—specifically calibrated for trials-style rock crawl and sand dunes—topped by a tall overdrive sixth for European motorway transit. Similar to the powertrain strategy deployed on the 2027 Ducati Hypermotard V2, the engine acts as a fully stressed structural member bolted directly to the cast-aluminum monocoque front frame, bringing dry weight down to 209 kg.

“The 2027 DesertX Rally represents a complete generational leap in chassis stiffness and throttle connection,” explained Andrea Ferraresi, Director of Ducati Centro Stile. “By moving to our new aluminum monocoque architecture and variable-timing V2, we dropped mass where riders feel it most while maintaining the competition-grade KYB suspension that podiumed in the Erzbergrodeo Iron Road Prologue.”

Closed-Cartridge KYB Pro Legs and Excel Cross-Spoke Wheels

The 2027 Ducati DesertX Rally features pro-grade 48mm closed-cartridge KYB inverted front forks with Kashima-coated outer tubes and DLC-treated inner stanchions, delivering a generous 250mm of front travel. The rear setup relies on a fully adjustable 46mm KYB monoshock linked to a massive aluminum double-sided swingarm via a progressive Full Floater linkage, providing 240mm of travel and a cavernous 280mm of ground clearance. An adjustable Öhlins steering damper mounted across the top triple clamp comes fitted as standard equipment to tame high-speed sand wash.

To withstand brutal rock impacts, Ducati equipped the Rally with Takasago Excel tubeless high-strength 36-spoke cross-spoked rims (21-inch front, 18-inch rear) that permit running heavy-duty mousses or tubeless repair plugs without requiring specialized trail-side bead breakers. Braking duties are handled by twin Brembo M50 monobloc radial calipers clamping 320mm floating discs, governed by a Bosch 6-axis IMU with Cornering ABS calibrated specifically for unpaved surfaces across dedicated Enduro and Rally ride modes.

The Rider’s Trade-Off: Unforgiving Seat Height vs Unmatched High-Speed Rigidity

Tying a pro-level rally suspension to a stiff monocoque frame produces a machine with surgical steering precision on gravel, but it demands serious physical commitments from the pilot. The standard rally perch sits at an intimidating 910mm—adjustable down to 890mm via an optional low saddle—meaning any rider under 185 cm will be dancing on tiptoes on off-camber ruts. Furthermore, the monocoque architecture transmits noticeably more chassis feedback and engine vibration through the bars than the older, compliant steel trellis.

While Ducati’s boutique Ducati EDS 450 Rally remains a specialized single-cylinder weapon for the Dakar bivouac, the DesertX Rally provides riders with true multi-day rally raid stamina paired with trans-continental tarmac touring ability.

The 2027 Ducati DesertX Rally will reach European dealerships in April 2027, featuring the dedicated Iron Giant tricolor livery and carbon-look handguards, with European pricing expected around €22,490.
