Ducati Enters 34-Litre EDS 450 Rally in Dakar 2027 and Plans 35-Unit Production Run
34-litre fuel capacity + A Desmo450 engine dropped into the unassisted Malles Moto class + Ducati just built the ultra-exclusive rally replica privateers will fight over.
Part of Throttle Times’ live coverage of EICMA 2026.
Ducati is heading back into the dunes with a dedicated single-cylinder rally weapon, and 35 wealthy privateers will actually get to park one in their workshops.
Developed in direct partnership between Ducati, rally specialist Rebel X Sports—headed by Dakar veteran Manuel Lucchese—and Turin design house Hyle Project, the all-new Ducati EDS 450 Rally is not a styling exercise. It is a fully homologated rally-raid racer engineered around Borgo Panigale’s motocross-derived Desmo450 powertrain. The machine will make its competitive debut at the 2027 Dakar Rally in the grueling “Original by Motul” (Malles Moto) class, where rider Tiziano Internò will race completely unassisted without a factory mechanics truck. Once the dust settles in Morocco, Ducati and Rebel X will open pre-orders in February 2027 for a strictly limited production run of 35 production units.
34-Litre Fuel Range and a Single-Piece Navigation Cockpit
The core conversion from motocrosser to trans-desert navigator begins with fuel capacity and navigation architecture. Standard 450cc motocross machines carry barely 7 litres of petrol; the EDS 450 Rally packs 34 litres across front and rear auxiliary cell arrangements, providing the 250-kilometre competitive stage range required by FIM rally raid regulations. The low-slung rear fuel cells wrap neatly around the subframe, integrating flush LED brake and tail lights directly into the tank moulding to protect critical wiring from flying roost.
Up front, the cockpit ditches conventional headlight brackets for a rigid, single-piece carbon-composite navigation tower. The tower accommodates digital roadbooks, twin tripmasters, and the mandatory GPS tracking beacons required by ASO marshals. Exhaust routing is handled by a custom titanium system engineered specifically by Akrapovič, featuring a tucked low-slung header and an upswept silencer designed to clear deep sand ruts without crushing on rock steps. Engine management comes via GET desert ECU mapping, programmed with a handlebar-mounted GPS speed-limiter switch for mandatory neutralised transit zones.
“Competing in Original by Motul means you fix the bike with your own hands after twelve hours in the saddle. Every single bracket, wire harness, and tank quick-release on the EDS 450 Rally had to be designed so you can strip it in the dark with a 10 mm T-handle.” — Manuel Lucchese, Project Lead at Rebel X Sports
The Rider’s Trade-Off: Desmodromic Precision vs. Field Serviceability
The engineering compromise at the heart of the EDS 450 Rally lies in Ducati’s signature desmodromic valvetrain. In closed-course motocross, the Desmo450 single delivers razor-sharp top-end revs and eliminates valve float under relentless abuse. But in marathon desert racing—particularly in Malles Moto where riders sleep in small tents beside their toolboxes—adjusting desmo shims between dunes is vastly more complex than checking screw-and-locknut adjusters on a traditional rally thumper.
To survive marathon stages, GET and Ducati engineered dual ignition maps that back off ignition timing slightly on poor-quality 91-octane fuel while enriching the low-to-midrange torque curve. You sacrifice a fraction of sheer peak horsepower to gain mechanical thermal stability when slogging through boiling sand dunes in first gear.

What We Know vs. What’s Still Unclear
What We Know: - Competitive debut is locked in for the 2027 Dakar Rally with Tiziano Internò riding unassisted in Original by Motul. - Customer production is capped at exactly 35 numbered units, with order books opening in February 2027. - Fuel capacity is 34 litres, paired with Akrapovič titanium exhaust, GET desert electronics, and pro navigation hardware. - Sits alongside the showroom Ducati DesertX Rally and Rieju’s Dakar 2027 entry as Dakar’s most unconventional entries.
What’s Still Unclear: - Final dry weight and suspension travel figures have not been published ahead of final FIM technical scrutineering. - Official retail pricing for the 35 customer replicas remains unconfirmed, though expectations hover well above €30,000. - Whether Ducati will enter a full RallyGP factory team for 2028 depending on Internò’s 2027 finish.
