Kawasaki has officially revealed the 2027 KLE650 and flagship KLE650 SE, resurrecting an iconic 1990s nameplate to give Team Green a legitimate, dirt-focused middleweight adventure motorcycle. After years of watching riders fit knobbies to the 17-inch cast alloy wheels of the street-biased Versys 650, Kawasaki has finally listened to trail riders: the new KLE650 arrives with a full-size 21-inch wire-spoked front wheel, long-travel KYB suspension, electronic throttle-by-wire, and standard cruise control.

The official reveal confirms the direction hinted at in Kawasaki’s earlier KLE650 teaser, where silhouettes pointed toward a tall, rally-inspired front beak. Arriving alongside larger sport-tourers like the four-cylinder Versys 900, the KLE650 provides Kawasaki with an authentic dirt tourer ready to lock horns with Yamaha’s middleweight platforms and newcomers like the Royal Enfield Himalayan 750.

Proven 649cc Twin Upgraded With Ride-by-Wire Precision

Powering the 2027 KLE650 is the latest evolution of Kawasaki’s venerable 649cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, updated with electronic throttle valves (throttle-by-wire) to meet Euro 5+ emissions while sharpening throttle pick-up in low-traction off-road conditions. The twin produces 70 hp (51.5 kW) at 8,600 rpm and 64 Nm of peak torque at 7,500 rpm, paired with an Assist & Slipper clutch that significantly reduces clutch lever pull during technical mountain climbing.

The shift to ride-by-wire unlocks an electronics suite previously missing from Kawasaki’s middleweights. Electronic Cruise Control comes standard on all variants—eliminating throttle wrist fatigue across long motorway transits—alongside multiple Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC) maps and switchable dual-channel ABS that allows independent rear-wheel lockup for steering on loose dirt.

“Our customers loved the bombproof reliability of the 649cc parallel-twin, but they were sick of hitting suspension bump stops the moment gravel roads got rough,” said a Kawasaki Europe product manager. “With a 21-inch front wheel and KYB inverted forks, the KLE650 is built to leave the asphalt behind without sacrificing daily highway utility.”

Rally-Spec 21-Inch Front Wheel and Long-Travel KYB Damping

The defining transformation of the KLE650 is its chassis geometry. Kawasaki scrapped the Versys platform’s road-biased architecture in favor of a compact high-tensile steel trellis frame designed specifically around a 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel setup. The standard KLE650 uses tube-type rims, while the premium SE model upgrades to tubeless wire-spoked wheels.

Up front, a 43mm KYB upside-down front fork provides 210 mm of wheel travel, soaking up washboard ruts and embedded boulders. At the rear, an all-new Uni-Trak shock delivers 196 mm of travel with adjustable spring preload. The setup lifts static ground clearance to a capable 220 mm, protected on the SE variant by a heavy-duty aluminum sump guard and wrap-around reinforced handguards.

The Rider’s Trade-Off: High Seat Height vs Off-Road Rollover

The mechanical compromise on the new KLE650 centers around accessibility versus obstacle clearance. By moving to a 21-inch front wheel and stretching suspension stroke past 200 mm, Kawasaki pushed the saddle height up to roughly 855 mm. Shorter riders who appreciated the flat-footing reassurance of the Versys 650 will find the KLE650 noticeably more demanding when paddling backwards on off-camber dirt trails.

However, on rock-strewn trails and deep tractor ruts, that trade-off delivers massive dividends. A 21-inch front wheel rolls smoothly over washouts and square-edge rocks where a 17-inch wheel would deflect or stall. Coupled with the standard SE quickshifter and tubeless rims, the KLE650 transforms from a mild commuter into a machine capable of crossing the Pyrenees on unpaved fire roads without anxiety.
