CFMoto has launched the Dual 250 in Malaysia, bringing its budget A2-friendly dual-sport to another new market after it quietly became a fixture of dealer floors in Italy and Spain over the past year. It’s not a glamorous bike, and CFMoto isn’t pretending otherwise — it’s a 154kg, 249cc single built to be cheap to buy, cheap to insure, and hard to break, which is exactly the kind of unglamorous good sense that never once stopped me daydreaming about riding one down a Balkan gravel road I have zero concrete plans to visit.

What CFMoto launched

The Dual 250 is a 249cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder dual-sport making 24bhp and 22.5Nm of torque through a six-speed gearbox — enough for an A2 licence in most of Europe, and comfortably enough for commuting duty with the odd gravel detour. It carries classic dual-sport proportions: tall stance, raised front mudguard, a flat one-piece seat, a belly pan, and a high-mounted under-seat exhaust that keeps the silencer well clear of rocks and ruts. Ground clearance is a genuinely useful 245mm, running on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheels.

Standard equipment includes full LED lighting, an LCD instrument display, a USB charging port and dual-channel ABS — nothing exotic, but nothing missing either for a bike at this price point. Curb weight comes in at 154kg with a 12.9-litre fuel tank, a combination that should make it easy to pick up when (not if) it goes down on loose ground.

The Dual 250 is already on sale in parts of Europe — Italy and Spain among them — priced from around EUR2,990, which undercuts most of the small-capacity ADV competition by a real margin. The Malaysia launch marks a new-market entry for an already-established model rather than a global debut, part of CFMoto’s steady push to plant the Dual 250 in as many markets as it can reach.

CFMoto’s push into cheap, usable dual-sports sits right next to the brand’s other, more electronically ambitious side — the 800MT-ES undercuts every rival on electronic suspension at a price nobody else in that segment can touch, while the Dual 250 goes the other direction entirely and just tries to be the cheapest sensible bike in the room. It’s the same company that’s simultaneously chasing the top end with the V4SR-RR superbike currently in Pininfarina’s wind tunnel — a brand covering both ends of the market at once, which is either a genuinely smart strategy or the reason I can no longer keep CFMoto’s entire lineup straight in my head.

At EUR2,990 I could, in theory, buy this bike outright and still have money left over for the gravel-road trip through the Julian Alps I’ve been “planning” since roughly three Aprils ago. I will not be doing this. I will instead read the spec sheet four more times and feel good about it.
