Shoei’s adventure lid has finally caught up to the ECE 22.06 era, and I’ve spent more time reading about a helmet’s peak aerodynamics than I have actually riding this month. The Hornet ADV – Shoei’s go-to for anyone who wants a proper off-road silhouette without giving up full-face comfort on the motorway home – gets its first real update in years with the new Hornet ADV 06.

What’s actually new

The headline item is the ECE 22/06 homologation itself – the tightened European safety standard that’s been slowly working its way through every manufacturer’s helmet range, testing more impact angles and speeds than the outgoing 22/05 standard. Underneath that new certification, Shoei’s kept the formula that made the outgoing Hornet ADV a favourite: the AIM+ shell (a multi-layer blend of glass and organic fibres) paired with a multi-density EPS liner, so the helmet can tune how it absorbs energy depending on the type of impact rather than treating every crash the same.

Everything else is a refinement rather than a reinvention. The peak’s been reworked for less lift at speed, which matters more than it sounds like it should – a badly designed ADV peak turns a motorway stretch into a slow-motion neck workout. Venting comes from inlets at the brow, upper head, and chin, with six outlets round the back doing the extraction, and the CNS-2 visor ships with a Pinlock insert already in the box and swaps out tool-free. Shoei’s E.Q.R.S. system is back too – pull a tab, the cheek pads release, and first responders can get the helmet off you without yanking on your neck, which is exactly the kind of feature you hope never gets used.

Fit-wise there are four shell sizes (XS-S, M, L, XL-XXL) so smaller heads aren’t stuck swimming in a size built for the biggest skull in the range, and the interior – centre pad, cheek pads in four thicknesses, ear pads – is fully removable and washable, which after three weeks of not touching my own gear I can say is a feature I will eventually need and currently do not deserve.

Sizes, pricing, and the availability asterisk

The Hornet ADV 06 is in dealers now in sizes XS through L; Shoei’s larger XL/XXL shell is coming from a separate mould and is following on afterwards rather than launching day-and-date with the rest of the range, so anyone with a bigger head has a short wait ahead. UK list pricing runs from £529.99 for plain colourways up to £649.99 for graphic finishes – roughly €620 to €760 at current exchange rates, though as ever, check your local Shoei distributor for the actual number in your currency, since list prices don’t always travel one-for-one across borders.

It replaces the outgoing Hornet ADV in Shoei’s range, not sits alongside it, so if you’re shopping the old one secondhand, this is the reason the new-in-box stock is drying up. I’ve got a Ladakh-adjacent gravel loop half-planned in a notes app that’s mostly full of grocery lists, and a helmet like this is squarely why I keep telling myself the trip is “basically booked.” It is not booked. But the ECE 22.06 cert means it’ll still be legal to wear whenever I eventually get around to it.
