Kawasaki has executed a decisive modernization of its crossover sport-touring lineup at EICMA 2026 with the global premiere of the 2027 Versys 900 and flagship Versys 900 SE.

Phasing out the awkward middle ground between the parallel-twin 650 and the heavyweight 1,043cc four, the new machine transplants the mechanical fury of the Z900 into an upright, all-weather grand tourer chassis armed with millimeter-wave radar safety systems.

The Facts: 122 HP Four-Cylinder Heart and ARAS Radar Tech

The heart of the 2027 Versys 900 is Kawasaki’s proven 948cc liquid-cooled 16-valve inline-four, retuned for touring tractability. It delivers 122 hp (89.7 kW) at 9,500 rpm and 97.3 Nm of peak torque at 8,000 rpm, routed through a close-ratio 6-speed transmission equipped with an assist-and-slipper clutch and bidirectional quickshifter. Crucially for younger European tourers, Kawasaki will also offer an A2-compliant 70 kW base variant capable of being restricted to 35 kW.

The motor acts as a fully stressed member inside a clean-sheet high-tensile steel trellis frame, yielding a balanced 50:50 front-to-rear static weight distribution. Rolling on 17-inch cast aluminum wheels wrapped in Metzeler Roadtec 01 sport-touring rubber (120/70-ZR17 front, 180/55-ZR17 rear), the chassis employs a 43mm inverted front fork and horizontal back-link gas-charged rear monoshock delivering 150mm of compliant travel at both ends.

On the electronics front, the Versys 900 introduces Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS) into Kawasaki’s middleweight fold. Powered by an internal IMU and compact radar hardware, the suite bundles Adaptive Cruise Control Lite (ACC Lite), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). The up-spec Versys 900 SE adds KECS electronic semi-active suspension, integrated cornering LED lights, factory heated grips, and a 5-inch full-color TFT display featuring smartphone turn-by-turn navigation.

“A four-cylinder sport-tourer is not built for alpine gravel trails; it is built to cruise across three European borders at 160 km/h in total comfort, then carve up the Stelvio Pass on the weekend.”

What Makes the Versys 900 Different: Touring Ergonomics and Packaging

Unlike the high-clearance adventure posture seen when Kawasaki reveals the 2027 KLE650 with a 21-inch front hoop, the Versys 900 is unapologetically pavement-biased. Its 840mm saddle height sits riders in a commanding upright triangle behind an aerodynamically sculpted front fairing with a tool-free four-position adjustable windscreen.

The factory luggage system integrates directly into the rear subframe rails without clumsy aftermarket tubular scaffolding. Fuel capacity stands at 21 litres, yielding an estimated cruising range exceeding 380 kilometers between fuel stops.

The Rider’s Trade-Off: Four-Cylinder Smoothness vs Twin Agility

Opting for an inline-four in the middleweight touring class is a deliberate philosophical choice. Four cylinders provide velvety high-speed cadence, turbine-smooth overtaking punch, and zero low-frequency handlebar buzz during 800-kilometer motorway hauls across France or Germany.

The compromise is mass and width: at approximately 219 kg kerb weight (223 kg on the SE), the Versys 900 carries roughly 15 kg more physical mass than a parallel-twin rival, requiring firmer counter-steering input when tossing the chassis through tight hairpin transitions.

In a European market where advanced safety tech is spreading fast—seen on both the radar-equipped Benelli TRK 902 Xplorer debuted at EICMA and the advanced Honda SENSING RIDE radar assist system—Kawasaki’s decision to package ARAS radar onto a sub-€14,000 inline-four provides long-distance riders with premium electronics without the €22,000 flagship invoice. European showroom deliveries commence in March 2027.
