French helmet innovator ROOF has unveiled the production-ready DJAGGER at EICMA 2026 in Milan, introducing an unconventional rear-opening full-face helmet that eliminates the traditional chin strap. Certified to rigorous ECE 22.06 standards, the helmet replaces the ubiquitous pull-over shell and front-hinged modular chin bar with a patented rear occipital mechanism that swings the entire back section of the helmet upward and rearward.

For thirty years, motorcycle helmets have forced riders into one of two compromises: squeezing their ears through a narrow full-face neck opening or accepting the weight, bulk, and mechanical latching complexity of a 180-degree flip-up. With the DJAGGER, ROOF founder Claude Morin’s design studio in Pégomas has created a genuine third architecture.

The Patented Rear Occipital Hinge: How It Works

The ROOF DJAGGER divides its structural shell into two precision-machined segments connected by an overhead articulated dual-pivot hinge. To put the helmet on, the rider depresses twin lateral release levers located at the base of the skull, causing the entire rear section—including the lower neck roll, occipital impact liner, and rear spoiler—to swing upward and back.

This movement leaves the entire front and underside of the helmet wide open. Rather than pulling the helmet down over the crown of the head, the rider simply steps their face directly forward into the cheek pads and eye port like putting on a theatrical mask, then pulls the rear section down until dual steel locking jaws engage with an audible click.

Crucially, because your head enters from behind rather than squeezing downward through a tight neck gasket, riders can put on and take off the DJAGGER while wearing prescription eyeglasses or heavy riding sunglasses without distorting the frame arms.

“Every conventional helmet forces your head through the narrowest part of the opening, which dictates looser cheek pads or compromises neck sealing. The DJAGGER reverses the geometry: you enter through the rear, allowing an anatomical neck contour that seals out draft and road noise while locking rigidly without a traditional strap,” explained ROOF’s design engineers in Milan.

Eliminating the Chin Strap While Passing ECE 22.06

The headline mechanical breakthrough of the ROOF DJAGGER is the complete absence of a D-ring or micrometric chin strap. Instead, the lower chin bar and the pivoting rear occipital shell form a continuous, anatomically contoured rigid collar that clamps gently beneath the rider’s mandible and around the base of the skull.

To achieve ECE 22.06 roll-off and retention compliance, the closure mechanism employs dual multi-point stainless steel latches embedded within reinforced carbon-composite bulkheads. Once locked, the helmet cannot be pulled off forward or backward, even under severe rotational impact forces. A pre-set padded chin retaining band rests against the throat to satisfy secondary retention regulations, but day-to-day fastening requires nothing more than closing the rear clamshell.

The shell is offered in both a fiberglass composite weave and an ultra-lightweight carbon edition (DJAGGER Carbon), keeping ready-to-ride weight at 1,450 g for the composite and 1,390 g for the carbon model. Optical hardware includes an Optical Class 1 panoramic visor with an anti-scratch coating and Pinlock MaxVision 70 insert, backed by an independently operated drop-down internal sun visor.

The Rider’s Trade-Off: Rear Mechanical Sealing vs Simple One-Piece Shells

The engineering compromise on the ROOF DJAGGER comes down to mechanical maintenance and cold-weather sealing compared to a conventional one-piece shell. While stepping into a helmet with glasses on is a revelation in convenience, the DJAGGER introduces moving hinges, steel latches, and rubber weather seals across the rear parting line.

Over thousands of kilometers of rain, road grime, and salt spray, those rubber perimeter gaskets will require regular silicone maintenance to stay supple and prevent cold Alpine drafts from creeping into the rear of the liner. Furthermore, while the clamshell eliminates strap choking on the throat, riders with unusual jaw or neck anatomy will need to test the pre-formed rigid collar carefully before buying, as it cannot be tightened arbitrarily like a woven nylon chin strap.

European Pricing, Delivery, and Market Relevance

ROOF confirmed that European deliveries of the DJAGGER will begin in February 2027 through authorized moto gear dealers across France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the Benelux. Retail pricing is set at €499 for the fiberglass composite model and €599 for the raw-weave DJAGGER Carbon.

For commuters and all-weather touring riders who have grown weary of fogged glasses and fiddly straps during morning fill-ups, the DJAGGER offers genuine innovation that stands apart from standard modulars in our adventure and touring helmet comparisons. If ROOF has nailed the high-speed wind noise insulation, the rear-opening helmet could finally move from cult French curiosity to mainstream European reality.
