It’s Yamaha’s first-ever 200cc entry in the R-Series, slotting in below the R15, and it’s built around a completely new engine rather than a bored-out existing one.
What’s actually new under the bodywork
The Yamaha YZF-R2 runs a new 204cc, liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a DOHC valvetrain — a first for this size class in the R-Series, since the R15 still uses a SOHC head — plus diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating on the valves to cut friction. Output is 26.5 PS (26.1 hp) at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm at 8,000 rpm, which Yamaha and the Indian trade press both point out edges out the YZF-R2’s two closest rivals, the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR, on peak power.
At 149 kg kerb weight (150 kg on the two higher trims), Yamaha’s calling it the lightest bike in its segment. I’ve owned exactly one motorcycle that weighed under 150 kg and it was a moped I was too embarrassed to admit I loved.

Three trims, and where the money actually goes
All three Yamaha YZF-R2 variants share the same engine and chassis; what changes is the electronics package. The base bike already gets the ride modes, TFT dash, dual-channel ABS and slipper clutch. The mid trim adds Yamaha’s third-generation bi-directional quickshifter — a segment first at this price point — plus body-coloured alloy wheels. The range-topping R2 M throws in preload-adjustable suspension front and rear, adjustable brake and clutch levers, a faux-suede seat and a keyless ignition system.
That’s a proper hierarchy for once — every trim above the base gets something you’d actually notice from the saddle, not just a different sticker kit.
Colours and availability
The Yamaha YZF-R2 comes in four colourways — Racing Blue, Matte White Pearl, Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Grey. Pre-bookings opened for a Rs 10,000 (~EUR110) deposit on 12 August 2026, with deliveries beginning mid-September. In India, it’s sold exclusively through Yamaha’s Blue Square dealer network, the same channel used for the rest of the R-Series.
Will the YZF-R2 make it to Europe?
Yamaha hasn’t announced any European plans for the YZF-R2 — this is an India-first, India-built launch, and small-capacity R-Series bikes have a habit of staying regional for a while before (if ever) crossing over. If it does eventually land in EU showrooms, the numbers already work in its favour: 26.5 PS is comfortably under the 35 kW cap for an A2 licence, which is exactly the crowd a bike this light and this cheap should be chasing. It’d also give Yamaha’s European lineup a proper entry point under the R7, the same way the XSR900 GP finally gave the US a bike Europe’s had since 2024 — these things do eventually travel, just not on any schedule you can plan a purchase around.
